How to Create an Inspiring Vision Board

Let’s talk vision boards.

When I first heard about vision boards some years ago now, I thought, ‘hey that’s kind of cool, I can choose pretty pictures and put them on a board and make my room look nice’; but I didn’t realise the true potency of creating a vision board for yourself. So, I put it on the back burner and told myself I was “too busy” to make a vision board right now. Yet they kept popping up in my life and I heard of others achieving literally everything on their vision board. I was so intrigued. Now I saw them as not only a trendy thing to do, but one that could be such a powerful exercise in personal development. So I thought I better give it ago. And seriously, this was such a game changer for me!!

There is no denying the power of creating a vision board for yourself. It’s a chance to dig deep and dream big. To proclaim what is it that you truly want for yourself and for your life. It’s like goal setting with a fun, creative twist. But first, we need to get really clear on what it is that we want to create for ourselves. This is where the wonderful creative process of vision boarding comes in – collecting photos, pictures, quotes, words, colours, activities etc that represent how you want your life to look and feel and what it is that you want to create for yourself.

Creating a vision board is the perfect example of the law of attraction – the ability to attract into your life what you focus on.

For me, creating my first vision board was an excellent way to help me on my journey of uncovering and strengthening my authenticity. It was an opportunity to put down on paper all the things I loved and felt connected to and it really felt like a true reflection of me and the person and life I wanted for myself. Looking at my vision board felt like ME. It almost felt like I was coming home to myself. It excited me and was a huge motivation.

For others, creating a vision board can be a fantastic way to allow themselves to start dreaming and thinking about the big picture and give themselves permission to put down on paper what they TRULY want.

So it’s pretty clear that vision boarding can be a fun, creative and super powerful way to attract what you want so I’ve created some of my top tips and tricks for creating your own  vision board:

1.     Decide if you want a physical vision board or a virtual one –online or pinterest for example.

First things first. Decide if you would prefer a physical vision board like a cork board, white board or large piece of cardboard that you can stick your visions on, or a virtual one – perhaps an online document or using Pinterest. It doesn’t matter what one you choose, just make sure you can freely add to it and it will be visible to you.

2.     Get out of your head and into your heart.

This is a biggie. Try to avoid getting caught in the chitter chatter of your thoughts and listening to your inner critic. It’s so easy to get caught up in your head these days but vision boarding really is an activity that comes from the heart and soul, not your head. Try to do activities or exercises before you vision board that help you connect with your heart, your soul or your intuition. Perhaps that’s meditating, journaling, being outside in nature, exercising, doing yoga for taking some deep diaphragmatic breathes. Try to get into a space where you can hear your intuition – the deep knowing – of what you truly want for yourself.

3.     Create some alone time for yourself and take your time

Vision boarding is a deeply personal experience and will be different for everyone so try to find some along time for yourself where you won’t be distracted or influenced by others. It’s also something that can take some time so please give that you yourself. If may also be something that you come back and add to over some days until you feel you have allowed yourself enough time to really dream big.

4.     Don’t over think it.

Try to avoid allowing your inner critic to over think it. Choose photos, pictures, words, colours, quotes that you really connect to. Try not to join the dots and try make sense of it all initially, just trust that if it excites you then it’s not random and can be part of your purpose and authenticity.

5.     Be present and don’t rush ahead.

Avoid running ahead and trying to plan out exactly how you will get there and achieve your goals.  This exercise is purely a chance to explore, conjured up and dream big. Don’t limit yourself by trying to figure it all out and let your ego/inner critic tell you your dreams are too big or not achievable because you don’t see a logical plan for how you’ll get there straight away. Trust that it will all unfold exactly the way its suppose to.

6.     Have it visible!

Make sure you have your vision board visible! If you have a physical vision board, hang it on your wall in your bedroom or in your office – somewhere where you will see it every day. If you have a virtual board, look at it on your phone or computer every day.

Although its super important to get really clear on what is it exactly that you want to achieve for yourself, it’s also really important to be reminded of that daily. What you focus on grows. This is where the law of attraction really comes into play. Look at your vision board daily to remind yourself of your dreams and vision and allow it to be a guiding light. If you’re traveling, make a virtual vision board or take a photo of your physical vision board to take away with you. Perhaps even set it as your background picture so you see it every day.
