The Perfect Morning Routine

There’s no denying having a morning routine definitely helps set you up for success each day, but is there reeeeally the “perfect” morning rountine? I’ve read and heard lots about others’ morning routines and how they prime themselves for the day and the one constant is that they all have one. That’s the important thing – having a routine. But when it comes down to the finer details, it doesn’t really matter as long as it’s YOURS.

Having a routine is so helpful; it takes the decision making out of it. We all have lots on our plate and decisions to make in our day to day lives, so take the decision making out of your morning and you’ll have the peace of mind to know that you’re setting yourself up for success and it leaves space for you to process other things. It also takes the “motivation” out of it and relies on dedication and discipline. I don’t know anyone who gets out of bed at 5am to exercise every morning and relies on motivation only to make it happen. Having a routine takes that out of the equation.

If you’re anything like me and have perfectionist tendencies, having the “perfect morning routine” was stressful. I had all these things that I was ‘meant’ to be doing and it all became a chore and too much. I’d have to wake up, do yoga, meditation, gratitude journal, exercise, journal, pull oracle cards, hot lemon water, say my affirmations, eat a nutritious breakfast, shower and get ready for work. It just ended up being a source of stress and anxiety for me doing all the “shoulds”…

Firstly, I think it’s important to identify what really matters to you and what makes you thrive? What boosts your energy or makes you feel calm and centred before starting your day. How do you want to feel that day and what things are going to help you achieve that?

Once you’re clear on your priorities and intentions, you can then create a morning routine that you LOVE and that serves you. It doesn’t matter what anyone else’s looks like, just that yours is for you. After all, we are all unique and there is no ‘one size fits all’.

Secondly, if you’re a type A personality or a high achiever/perfectionist, I encourage you to allow yourself some grace and flexibility. Not every morning will be the same, there will be things that pop up that mean that you may not be able to do your morning routine to a T. there may be times where you’re away, traveling, or something comes up that requires your urgent attention. You may be changing jobs, you may be unwell, you may have sick kids. Life is always fill out change – that’s the one certainty in life right. So please know that you will have a beautiful day, even if you can’t complete your usual morning routine. In these situations, grace and compassion are vital. It may be that you can do one or two things from your routine, or it may be that you have to be a bit creative and do what you can with what you’ve got. AND THAT’S OKAY. You will be okay. For me, knowing my top priorities in the morning is helpful, so that on any given day, even if something comes up unexpectedly, I know that I need to fit this one thing into my morning before I start my day.

Hope this helps you consider what YOUR morning routine looks like or want you might want it to look like! As always, please feel free to leave a comment below or flick me an email and tell me about your morning routine or any questions you may have.

Much Love,

Evie xx
